Top tips

Get comfortable with real-world business news

One of the best things I did before starting the BTEC Business course was to Regularly read or watch business news. Understanding how real companies operate and respond to challenges helped me connect classroom topics—like marketing campaigns or international trade—to the real world. It makes lessons way more interesting and easier to understand!

Revise basic maths like percentages, profit/loss, and budgeting.

Also, try getting familiar with Excel—being able to create simple spreadsheets or charts will give you a serious head start for finance and project assignments.

Practise speaking in front of people

This course involves a lot of presentations and group projects. If you’re not confident speaking in front of people, start practising now. Even just explaining a topic to friends or family helps. Good communication skills will not only boost your grades but also help in work experience or future interviews.

 FAQs

  • Definitely not all theory. Business courses are known for being practical—you’ll work on real-life scenarios, group projects, presentations, and even roleplays. It’s designed to prepare you for the real world.

  • Loads of options! You could go to university to study things like business management, marketing, or finance. You can also start an apprenticeship, get a job in areas like retail, admin, or digital marketing—or even start your own business.

  • You don’t need to be a maths genius, but some basic maths skills (like percentages, budgeting, and spreadsheets) are useful—especially for finance units. Don’t worry, you’ll get support and learn as you go.
