Meet Martin
"Before starting the course, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do—but getting hands-on in the workshop made everything click. I’ve discovered a real passion for working with cars, and now I’m aiming for a career as a qualified mechanic. It’s opened doors I never even knew existed."
Top tips
Get comfortable using basic tools
Before you start, get familiar with hand tools like spanners, screwdrivers, and socket sets. You don’t need to be an expert—but knowing the names and uses of common tools will give you a head start in the workshop and boost your confidence from day one.
1
Brush up on basic car parts and systems
It really helps to learn the names of different parts of a car—like brakes, suspension, or the cooling system. Even watching a few YouTube videos or looking under the bonnet of a car can help things click faster when you’re in class.
2
Take workshop safety seriously
One of the first things you’ll cover is health and safety, and it’s important. Wearing the right gear, keeping your work area clean, and using tools properly will keep you (and everyone else) safe. Plus, it shows your tutors that you’re taking the course seriously.
