Top tips

Build a strong, diverse portfolio early on.

Your portfolio is your creative passport! Start collecting and curating your work now—include sketchbooks, experiments, final pieces, and even personal projects. Admissions tutors and future employers want to see your process, so show how your ideas develop from concept to creation.

1

Visit galleries, exhibitions, and design festivals regularly (Tate, V&A, local art shows).

Document what catches your eye and reflect on it in a sketchbook or blog. Inspiration doesn’t just come from art — look at fashion, architecture, film, and everyday life.

2

Get comfortable talking about your work.

Art and Design courses involve a lot of critiques and group discussions. Practice explaining your ideas, choices, and influences clearly and confidently. Whether it’s in front of your class or on a application, being able to express your creative voice is just as important as the work itself.

3

We’re officially Outstanding!

New City College has been rated Outstanding by Ofsted (March 2025) — the highest grade possible.

Inspectors praised our inclusive culture, exceptional teaching, strong student support, and inspirational leadership. We’re proud to be the largest college in the UK to achieve this top rating — and even prouder of what it means for our students.
